Day-2 Sep-6-09

Today we got off the highways, and spent most of our time traveling around the Catskills State Park in NY. We covered about 250 miles of back roads in about 7 hours, including stops.

Most of the roads in the park are pretty scenic, with very little traffic. We did spot a few deer, but none of them wandered across the road in front of us.

The majority of time we were in the park, there were creeks that ran right along the roadside. We saw a lot of folks fly fishing, biking and hiking throughout the park.

There are a number of fairly large lakes in the park as well. Below is one of the lakes. As we passed over the dam, there was a small powerhouse off to the side.

While we had no issue with deer in the road, we did have another encounter. Shortly after passing the lake shown above, I claimed my first roadkill with the wing. A squirrel with a death wish decided to run into the road. He stopped in the middle, and gave me that squirrel "eyes in the headlights" look, and could not decide which way to go. Well, he was too slow on the draw, and found himself getting up close with my front tire, then my rear tire, then the underside of our new trailer (hope he appreciated the suspension under there as much as I do). Needless to say, he is no longer with us :(

Toward the end of the day, we ended up in Woodstock NY. The town was small and quaint, but there were a ton of people out and about. I think everyone was enjoying the last holiday weekend of the summer.

There are a lot of shops in town, but parking is difficult to find.

In the center of town, there was a small gathering area. Today, the area was occupied by a group of musicians. Some playing steel drums, while others sang. It was interesting, to say the least. Many of these people appeared to think it was still 1969 !!

Some of the shops are throwbacks to the days of the concert. This one seemed to carry anything you might want, as long as it involved Jimi Hendrix, or tye-dye.

After Woodstock, we road another 35 miles through the park, ending up at our hotel in Kingston NY.

Tomorrow, we will spend more time in the park (squirrels beware) and then head over to Vermont for a few days.
